Chapter 14: The Fox, Dreaming
Ciel x Reader

"AIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDEN!!!!!!!!!"

"Yes, my mistress?"

Without lifting my head from my desk, I raise a hand and point at my study door, "get me some more tea. Something that will wake me up."

"Understood miss."

I heard Aiden walk toward the door and close it firmly. I let out a long, annoyed groan.

It's been a little over a month and a half since I last saw Ciel, and it was back to work for me.

The thick bundle of papers beside me were all just trading or orders or something having to do with my company's clothing.

(L/N) Clothing, London's finest. I have designers and sewers and such all working for me, a 12-year-old girl.

I remember the day I visited one of my factories. One had asked if I came to represent my mother. That woman was suspended for two weeks.

It didn't matter my age. I was taught how to behave in society and run a business by Aiden. He had told me that I was a natural when it came to everything: literature, riding, shooting. The only thing is I didn't do music very well.

Yet after many many…many music lessons, we learned to leave that spot untouched.

Anyway, I hated work. Always have and always will.

I don't care what color the fabric should be, or what style the ruffles should fall, or how a hat can match, that's the designers' job!

No, we are not going to kill baby seals to start a new line of fur coats, yes trade some wool with the Indian company for finer fabric, and no, faux fur is still unacceptable.

Ugh. Idiots.

I'm willing to bet anything this time next week I'll be having visitors complaining about my decisions.

Even though they all work for me and shouldn't even question me.

Sometimes, if I'm honest with myself, I miss being able to play all day and sleep peacefully all night. Everything was easy, and everyone was happy.

If not for that day, I probably would be living that type of lifestyle today: an ignorant child who wouldn't know better.

With my head still down, I close my eyes softly, the sleepless nights starting to get to me…

==============

Jodie and I knew how to survive. We've had to take care of ourselves since when we first became orphaned, many many years ago.

Even with our situation, Jodie and I were happy. She would look through toy stores and I would use money that was given to us by generous people to buy ourselves food and sometimes sweets.

But our lives were anything but happy. Looking back at it, we only dreamt of toys and chocolates instead of how 4-and-7-year-old little girls can earn money in Great Britain.

Then, that day happened. The happiest day of my life.

Jodie and I were eating a can of beans one rainy night under the candy shop's tent when a carriage rolled by. It wasn't special, it looked like every other carriage: two brown horses pulling the golden trim reins of the tan carriage. It rolled by, but then it came back.

A young, well-dressed woman opened the door and stepped out with an umbrella over her head. She walked up to my sister and me, her deep brown eyes looked over us.

I looked into those eyes and saw something I haven't seen in any human before: concern.

She looked at the man sitting in the carriage and nods her head. I can't see the man's face, but I saw his fancy suit. These people were wealthy.

I held my sister close to me, suspicious of the woman a bit. Why did she stop for us?

The lights of the candy shop behind us was reflecting off he pale face, which was kind and trusting.

"Hello little ones," she had said. Her voice was sweet and smooth, like that of a powerful opera singer. I nod my head once, holding my curious sister closer.

"I can't help but notice your food there…"

I take the can that we left out protectively, so she wouldn't take it. Instead of retreating, she laughs.

"I wasn't going to take it, don't worry. I was actually going to invite you to my home for more food."

Jodie looks up at me with happiness and hunger in her eyes. I was a bit wary, but I nodded my head again.

I helped my sister up and we were lead by the lady to her carriage.

I got a better look at the man waiting inside. He had ink black shiny hair that went to his neck and matching eyes.

Finally we we're let out of the carriage. Their house was huge. I've never seen anything as big except for Buckingham Palace. Were these people royalty?

I looked at Jodie. Her eyes are lit up bright and her mouth was curved up in an amazing smile. She gripped my hand hard. How was she not scared? I was getting terrified.

I don't know why, but I had a horrible feeling that something awful will happen if we stay here, but they offered food and shelter in a gigantic home. I can't…we can't deny that.

I felt a pat on my back. I look up and saw the man towering over me. He wore a smile on his face that eased my worries a bit, but I will keep my guard up.

The inside was just as big, maybe even bigger, and the food was nothing short of glorious. Jodie dug in right away, while I tried to keep a steady pace.

Keyword: tried.

The man and woman smiled at each other as they watched us eat. They wasn't sinister, they were soft and genuine.

After a while, Jodie had fallen asleep due to food coma. Being a bit full myself, I thanked the hosts and began to get my heavy little sister off the chair so we can leave.

But the man's voice stopped me. It was soft and smooth, like velvet.

He said, "actually, we have some extra rooms in this huge house. Maybe you two can stay for the night?"

I stopped in my tracks and looked up at him. His smile was simple, but it held a lot of emotion, I can see it.

That offer somehow sold me. I agreed to his offer, and after a night back into comfy sheets and our own bed, maybe Jodie and I can stay here just a bit longer.

==============

It's been a year since we began living with the (L/N)s. It took me a while, but I wholeheartedly trusted them with my sister's and my own life.

I even started calling them mother and father as they requested.

My father was known as "The Queen's Fox." I didn't understand why at first, but after some research, I got it.

He and I had some good memories together: him helping me reach the high books, teaching me the big words, cold late nights by the fire reading thick books. He was my family.

Mother was no different. Even though I knew she preferred the adorable one that is my sister, she never failed to let me know she loved me. She taught me a few recipes, bought me gifts, made sure I was comfortable. She never let me down.

One day I wanted to play so I went to my father to see if he would play with me because Jodie was sick and mother was worrying over her.

When I walked into his study, he looked stressed and tired. He looked up at the disturbance and when he saw me he smiled.

I ran over and sat on his lap and asked of he wanted to play. He said he needed to get work done.

That was the day I decided to help, and it was the day my father discovered I was a prodigy.

After that, father gave me private tutoring lessons so one day I can run his company.

I was so excited about everything I learned, I nearly forgot Christmas was coming! With mother's help, I selected the perfect gift for Jodie: a Funtom Bitter Rabbit, the same one we saw in the window.

Everything was ready on the day of December 23, 1885. My father was in mourning of his friend Vincent, who was killed a week prior along with his family. I didn't know them, but it was really sad.

We prayed to God to their families and that they may rest in peace. That would be the last time I would ever pray with my family.

Although we were in mourning, Jodie and I were excited for Christmas. I remember that day clear as crystal, as if it happened too recently.

Jodie and I were in her pink bedroom playing with some toys we got from some of father's business partners when we heard a blood curling shriek…

==============

"My mistress!"

I bolt upright, startled by the voice. I wipe drool from one side of my face disgusted, "what Aiden? What do you want?"

Aiden bows before continuing, "my apologies, but you received an invitation to a Halloween party at the Phantomhive manor on the 31st."

I perk up slightly, but not enough for Aiden to notice, "alright, find me a fitting costume, nothing revealing however. I want to stay modest."

Aiden bows and leaves the room. My desk was covered in papers, do I started my work again.

I already forgot what I was dreaming about.
